Become an Innovative Recruiter Marlene Wilson Remember the old saying about first impressions? Using the right approach makes all the difference when inviting people to serve in ministry, too. How positively would you respond if someone approached you with messages such as:
- I’ve called 10 people, and you’re the last one on my list.
- There’s really nothing to this job—anyone can do it!
- We’re desperate for help.
- It’s your turn.
- I helped you last time, now you have to help me.
In marketing language, these messages actually de-market your cause. What a difference it makes when we start looking at recruitment as an invitation to become involved in something important, challenging, and fun. Here are some creative examples:
- Wanted…males with the spirit of Michael Jordan and the heart of a dad to help coach junior high boys basketball. While you are training your team, you will enjoy the opportunity to win the ultimate game—their salvation! Contact John Doe at 555-5555 to get the playbook.
- Looking for a fun and rewarding challenge? Take a leap! NO, not with bungee jumping, but by being a supportive and encouraging Vacation Bible School teacher for young children. We provide training, support, location, snacks, and kids! You provide time, talent, energy, and love. If you’d like to take the plunge, call 555-5555.
- Have you ever dreamed of a successful modeling career? No dieting required, no runway experience necessary, and you don’t even have to be photogenic. We’ll get you in shape with free training. Our middle schoolers are looking for role models for one hour every Sunday evening. To get started in your successful modeling career call…
- Do you like to tell people where to go? Do you like to put people in their places? Be an usher!
- Would you like to put your fist in someone’s mouth and be rewarded for it? Our puppet team is looking for additional puppeteers. All you need is a desire to be used by God in ministry to others. We provide training and convenient practice times. If you crave faith-building, rewarding ministry that’s youth-charged, call for more information.
- Did you know a spider has eight arms? Unfortunately, choir directors only have two. Like Moses, the arms of choir director Marilyn Morton are getting tired. She needs help in reorganizing the Hosanna Singers (grades 1-6). Has God equipped you with the gift of music (or organization)? Join our music ministry for the young. Hosanna singers meet Sunday evenings at 6:00.
All of these wonderful recruitment messages were developed by church workshop participants. Try getting a group of teens or families together and brainstorm your own set of invitations for involvement. You’ll be amazed at how the creativity flows! And when people respond to your invitations, be sure to interview them so that you match the right people to the right ministries. Marlene Wilson has written and trained on volunteer issues for 35 years. More than a quarter of a million people have attended her workshops. Copyright © 2004, Group Publishing, Inc.
